Jesus asked for me to wait with Him,
but I fell asleep instead.
All the life He would give for my sin,
and all I could think about was going to bed.
I’m sure the wind and sea stayed up,
The fox and the owl kept lookout,
But I was sleeping when He took the cup,
nowhere to be found in His hour of doubt.
Back then I couldn’t keep my eyes open,
Now I have a hard time closing them,
Each time I see my broken devotion,
The look He gave me when they took Him in.
For the rest of my life I will remember when,
The countless tears I will shed,
When Jesus asked for me to wait with Him,
but I fell asleep instead.
