When“law-keepers” Call The Lawmaker a Lawbreaker

In Luke 14, when Jesus is being scrutinized by religious leaders for healing on the Sabbath, he responds in verse 5, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?”

This wasn’t just some catchy phrase of common sense. Jesus was quoting the Law (Deut. 22:4) to self-proclaimed “teachers of the Law.” Throughout the gospels, when Jesus was accused of breaking the Law, he would quote the part of the Law his accusers were breaking.

This scene reminds us of several things. Here are just a few: 1. Jesus never disregarded or did away with the Law. Rather, he showed people what true law-keeping/law-living was. 2. Knowing the truth is not the same as keeping the truth. 3. Sometimes, those who claim to keep the law greatest actually break the part of the Law God calls greatest (love). 4. And finally, sometimes those with the most truth, miss the Truth most.
