Where Does my Help Come From?

Psalm 1211. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?2. My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.3. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.4. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.5. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand.6. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.7. The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.8.The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.David wrote this psalm shortly after Samuel had died. He was hurting. He was missing someone he loved dearly. Samuel was someone David could trust. We all have people in our life like Samuel. People we confide in. Individuals that love us, who stick with us through difficulty. People God speaks through. When these people die it knocks the breath out of us. Who can we confide in now? Something is missing. It must've been hard for David to imagine life without Samuel. No wonder he contemplated "from where will come my help now?"But when David realized that his last, earthly, confidant was gone, he turned to the Lord for his sole remaining help. David discovered In the end there is nothing left to hold onto but God. Friends and family are important, but unfortunately we can lose them. We can never lose God.This Psalm was sung by people on their way to Jerusalem for the annual festivals. The moment the walls of Jerusalem came into view they would start singing. It was a reminder that when all else fails, and all light seems to be going out, God "will keep your life." Trust Him. Confide in Him. We'll be in Jerusalem (New Jerusalem) soon.
